This page explains what happens with your data if you subscribe to email updates from this site or otherwise interact with it.
Email subscriptions
If you subscribe to receive posts by email, your email address is collected and stored by Buttondown, the email service provider used to run this newsletter. Buttondown processes this data on my behalf and maintains its own compliance with GDPR and applicable data protection law. You can review Buttondown’s privacy policy at buttondown.com/privacy.
I do not store, log, or have direct access to your email address outside of Buttondown’s platform. No subscriber data is written to this website’s codebase, hosting, or version history.
Subscribing requires double opt-in: you will receive a confirmation email and must click to confirm before you are added to the list. This confirms consent and prevents accidental sign-ups.
What I send
Subscribers receive new posts from this site by email, generally two per week. I do not send unrelated marketing, sell subscriber lists, or share your email address with third parties beyond Buttondown as the processor.
Tracking
Emails sent through this newsletter include standard open and click tracking, provided by Buttondown. This tells me which posts get read, which helps me decide what to write next. It does not identify you individually to me beyond aggregate engagement data.
Unsubscribing
Every email includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing is immediate and removes your address from future sends. You can also manage your subscription preferences directly through the link in any email you’ve received.
Website analytics
This site uses two analytics tools, neither of which stores personal data or sets tracking cookies before consent.
GoatCounter counts page views using a cookieless, privacy-preserving method. It loads on every page and records only anonymous, aggregate data — no cookies, no fingerprinting, no personal identifiers. You can review GoatCounter’s approach at goatcounter.com/privacy.
Google Analytics 4 loads only if you grant consent in the banner shown on your first visit. If you decline, no GA4 data is collected. IP addresses are anonymized. You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing the nr-consent value from your browser’s local storage.
